Hey there, I’m Mark.
In some kind of order, I’m a story consultant, script editor, screenwriter, podcaster, narrative designer, coach, teacher, reader, film fan, and story structure nerd.
If it’s related to story, I’m in.
What I do
Story Consulting / Script Editing
If you are looking for someone to take a deep dive into your script, bible, etc. and help in shaping a script or story, you can contact me for further details.
Teaching
My background is in education, with over 10 years of classroom experience all over the world. I think it’s really important that I came to film through education, not the other way around. And I am as passionate about helping burgeoning writers as I am about my own, personal writing. This year, I’ve taught on courses for the National Film School, Ireland and Publishing Ireland.
Podcasting
As someone passionate about helping writers, I decided to create the podcast that I wished I had had when I was studying screenwriting in university. Mark Overanalyses Film focuses on the story structure of a different film (or TV series) every episode to explore what it really means and how it goes about meaning it.
I am also available as a guest for other podcasts.
Screenwriting
In between being busy staring out windows, I’ve somehow written shorts, a TV pilot, and several feature length screenplays. I’m not totally sure how that happened.
Reading
I read scripts for clients and provide coverage. You can contact me for further details.
Coaching
I offer one-to-one coaching sessions via Zoom. For more info, go to Coaching.
Writing on Writing
Sometimes, if I’m in real danger of getting some scriptwriting done, I will write something else. Occasionally, this might be a short story, but most of the time it’s an article or post about story structure, classic films, current films, video game narratives, or all of the above.
About me
In 2020, I achieved a first class honours on an MA in Screenwriting in the National Film School, Ireland. It was there I discovered that I not only love to write, but I also love to help others with their writing. Sometimes it was bouncing around ideas. Sometimes it was getting the wording just so. Whatever it was, as long as I was helping the writer to tell the story that they wanted to tell, I was enjoying myself.
Since then, I’ve worked with screenwriters, directors, producers, national film & tv institutions, agencies, novelists, playwrights, and game developers on developing screenplays, bibles, outlines, treatments, and other materials.
Besides, I have taught for the Irish Writers Centre, Griffith College, Publishing Ireland, and on the very same MA programme I completed; become a reader of new work for The Abbey, Ireland’s national theatre; and created the podcast Mark Overanalyses Film, which takes a story structure approach to (over)analysing what great films mean and how they go about meaning it.
I have also, of course, written shorts, a TV pilot, and 3 feature length screenplays as well as many short stories. My first short film, This Conversation Has Been Removed, is currently in competition at OSCAR-, BAFTA-, and IFTA-associated festivals. In addition, over the years, I’ve won and been a finalist in several pitching competitions. In 2025, I also wrote and published my first piece of Interactive Fiction, Just Be Normal, Or Funny, Or Cool, Or Something, and was accepted the role of lead writer on a vertical slice for narrative strategy game Persevere by game studio Universe Or Nothing.
If you want — or need — to tell a story, I can help you.
